The Betas were members of the team that worked on Project Zero Dawn, the global terraforming system designed and implemented to restore the Earth to a habitable state and then restore life to it after all life had been eradicated and the Earth rendered sterile by the Faro Plague.

Presumably, as beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet behind alpha, the Betas were the second tier of command and control of the project, subordinate only to the Alphas, who were the lead designers and implementers of the project.

History[]

As the Faro Plague relentlessly advanced and consumed the biosphere during Operation: Enduring Victory, it severely curtailed the time left to complete Zero Dawn by executing an unexpected and highly successful pincer move against the last military salient in Wichita, Kansas, collapsing the offensive's eastern line. As the robots advanced toward the Zero Dawn Project Facility, the Zero Dawn team rushed to get the system operational before evacuating to Elysium, where they would live out the rest of their lives safe from the then uninhabitable external environment and hostile robots. The Betas were evacuated after the Gammas. However, the Alphas were forced to stay and permanently seal themselves in GAIA Prime in order to complete the work on the system.[1]

The Betas and Gammas thus spent the rest of their lives in Elysium, the last living organisms on the planet along with the Alphas in GAIA Prime and the few humans in other bunkers. According to a datapoint found by the Nora Brave Aloy while she investigated the remains of the Zero Dawn Project Facility, this would have been no more than 100 years.[2]
