Asera is a character in the Horizon Zero Dawn comic series, a minor antagonist in Horizon Forbidden West and the main antagonist of Horizon Call of the Mountain. She is the leader of the Sons of Prometheus and a former member of Dervahl's Oseram freebooters.
History[]
Asera was the first female Oseram tinkerer to have her own forge, a remarkable achievement within the deeply patriarchal tribe.[1]
Red Raids[]
During the Red Raids, Asera was a member of Dervahl's band of freebooters who fought back against the Carja invaders after they killed her family. She was his most important follower and second-in-command. During one raid on a Carja convoy transporting Oseram captives to the Sundom, their fellow freebooter Ersa was captured and taken to Meridian. Upon Ersa's escape and return to the Claim, Asera was among the people who accused her of striking a deal with the Carja to sell the freebooters out. Two years later, Prince Avad arrived at the freebooter camp to forge an alliance with the Oseram and end the Red Raids for good. Dervahl feigned acceptance, but later that night he conspired with Asera to destroy Meridian and wipe out the Carja. They were overheard by Erend, who relayed the information to Ersa and Avad. To prevent him from potentially jeopardizing the alliance, the allies got rid of Dervahl and proceeded to arrest his loyalists, Asera among them. She remained in captivity for an unknown amount of time, though she evidently aided Dervahl during his plot to destroy Meridian a few years later.[2]
Plot against Meridian[]
Following Dervahl's capture after the failure of his plot to destroy Meridian, Asera assumed leadership of what little remained of his ragtag followers. They raided Carja and Shadow Carja camps and convoys for supplies, often killing their victims in brutal fashion. In one such raid, Asera obtained override tech from an Eclipse camp.
They also set up camp in the ruins of Talonreach, Elder's Calling, and Devil's Anger for salvaging operations and to conduct experiments with machine lures. Talonreach was eventually abandoned after setting up a lure that used the ruin's satellite dish to project the signal even further, leading to machines swarming the valley below at Dawn's Grasp. Armed with this knowledge, Asera used the override tech she captured to override several Tallnecks and placed lures on them, using the Tallnecks as a signal booster and planned to move said Tallnecks to Meridian. This was discovered and foiled by Ryas, who pursued her into the valleys nearby Eagle's Fall and destroyed the lures mounted on each Tallneck. In desperation, Asera crashed her Tallneck into one Ryas was riding in an attempt to kill him but ended up destroying her own.
Surviving the crash, Asera fled into Day's End, setting up traps to deter her pursuer. She was eventually cornered at the Sun-Ring at the top and used a machine lure to summon a Fireclaw. The ensuing fight set fire to the structure, causing much of it to collapse. Rather than let herself be saved by a Carja, Asera chose to fall into the jungle below.
Sons of Prometheus[]
After surviving her fall at Day's End, Asera and her followers fled to the Forbidden West. She was contacted by the Banuk wanderer Sylens, who provided her with the technology necessary to override machines. Asera used the information to reform the group into the Sons of Prometheus, an organization bent on destroying the Carja and exacting vengeance for the Red Raids. She also shared the technology with Regalla's Rebels, another group seeking vengeance against the Carja.[1]
However, the alliance's shared camps were raided one-by-one by Aloy, whom Asera placed a kill order on. Additionally, she threatened to punch any Son of Prometheus in the throat if they dared call Aloy "Champion" or "Savior" to her face and ordered them to acquire the huntress' Focus in order to get some leverage over Sylens.
Death[]
Erend managed to extract data on a location called First Forge from the Focus of a Sons of Prometheus agent. He shared this information with Aloy and they went to the location together. Once inside, they engaged and killed Asera's men before chasing her through a large underground cave, all the way avoiding her many booby traps. After finally catching up to Asera in a clearing outside the cave, Aloy and Erend were forced to engage her, in addition to two overridden Clawstriders. Although she fought viciously, Asera eventually fell to the two. A fragment of her armor was collected by Erend and taken back to the Base, and her bow was taken by Aloy.
Personality[]
Asera is a sharp-tempered, sharp-tongued woman with a burning hatred for the Carja and any Oseram who side with them.
Records indicate that Asera is misandrist, stemming from resentment towards her father.
