"A good shards-man knows how to turn impeding disaster into an opportunity."
―Abadund

Abadund is a character in Horizon Forbidden West.

History[]

A merchant by trade, Abadund came to work alongside Morlund after witnessing one of the latter's early shows. He, along with Morlund and Stemmur Wordsmith, came to form a performing trio, with Abadund mainly handling the group's finances (especially since his companions lacked anything resembling financial sense).[1]

Events of Horizon Forbidden West[]

After reaching the Stillsands, the trio set up camp in a tower, where they found a way into the underground ruins. However, just when the Embers were in reach, the ruins flooded, and the three barely escaped. To Abadund's frustration, Morlund refused to give up hope, nearly drowning himself in his attempts to return to the Embers below. After the second failed attempt, Abadund gave Morlund an ultimatum: either leave with them or be left behind to die alone.[2]

This ultimatum was snuffed by the arrival of a Nora spear-maiden named Aloy, who had come to the ruins for her own mission. Abadund could only watch in befuddled exasperation as she began to discuss designs with Morlund for his "Diving Bubble" prototype. Certain that she had doomed Morlund, Abadund could do little more than sulk and reluctantly trade with her if she wished.[2]

However, Abadund's fears were thankfully never realized. Using the Diving Mask that she constructed with Morlund, Aloy dove into the ruins and empty the cavern. The last obstacle for her and the three showmen was a Tideripper. While they left the task of felling it largely to the huntress, the showmen nevertheless gave supporting fire from higher ground. When the trio returned to the surface with the Embers, they found the Stillsands illuminated with holograms. The three realized the potential of the site as an entertainment venture, with Abadund in particular thinking about gambling options.[2]

By the time Aloy returned, she encountered Abadund and Delah arguing, as he refused to tell her which way Boomer had run off to, insisting it was unsafe. However, Aloy convinced him to tell them.[3]

Personality[]

"The old bean-counter has the personality of a moss-eaten rock."
Stemmur on Abadund

A somewhat grumpy penny-pincher, Abadund is the voice of cynicism and restraint that balances out the boundless vision of his companions. However, he ultimately means well, and shares Morlund's dream.

Trivia[]

  • Delah addresses Abadund as "spectacles", despite the fact that Abadund doesn't wear glasses.[4]
    • It's unknown whether something else was meant by this, or that Abadund was originally intended to wear glasses but Delah's line wasn't updated when his design was changed.
