"A long way from the desert, aren't we?"
―Jaxx

A Tribe Apart is a side quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

Synopsis[]

Wandering by the fields of Plainsong, Aloy encounters a complaining older farmer harvesting roots. Approaching the farmer, Emboh, he mentions his friend Jaxx had left for Stone's Echo after hearing about a group of young Tenakth lingering near the settlement. Deciding to investigate, Aloy heads off to find Jaxx.

Upon reaching Stone's Echo, Jaxx hails Aloy, asking for her assistance in approaching the Tenakth warriors, who have taken refuge in a nearby cave. Following Jaxx to the cave, they are met at the cave mouth by Sokorra, who claims the cave as belonging to the Eagle Squad. After Jaxx presents the Tenakth sign for parley, Sokorra permits them entry. She leads them to the remaining members of the group, all of whom were injured after their training mission went wrong: one of them, Sokorra's brother Korreh, has been blinded. The Tenakth become suspicious of Jaxx's knowledge of their customs. Korreh, although blinded, recognizes that Jaxx is a Veteran: a Tenakth exchanged to the Utaru as part of a practice abandoned soon after the Derangement.

When asked what the Tenakth warriors would need to return back to their territory, Sokorra tells them of a great cache of resources gathered by a Tenakth Marshal during the Rout, stored in the Carja outpost of Riverwatch. Protesting vehemently that she cannot allow Aloy and Jaxx to retrieve the resources for them, Sokorra only agrees to let them help if she goes with them. Leaving Ghrella, Rhetta, and Korreh behind, they set off for the outpost.

The three reach the now abandoned outpost, finding it crawling with Glinthawks and Burrowers. After defeating the machines, Aloy leaves Sokorra and Jaxx to explore the outpost. After finding a way up the outpost's tower, Aloy finds the cache, which appears much too small. Concerned that there is little left to sustain the young warriors for long, Aloy returns to Jaxx and Sokorra. However, Aloy finds them under attack by another wave of machines. After teaming up again to defeat the machines, Aloy hands Sokorra the resources she recovered. Disappointed that there isn't more, it becomes clear that Sokorra had no intention of returning to Tenakth territory. Knowing that the Tenakth will force Korreh to face trial against a machine for his blindness, Sokorra had resigned her squad to living in the wilds.

Aloy and Jaxx come up with a solution: with Korreh's permission, Jaxx will take him in and convince the Chorus to let him stay in Plainsong. Although Sokorra objects to leaving her brother behind, Korreh urges her to let him go and return to their homeland. Sokorra relents but with the promise to visit him in Plainsong.

Trivia[]

  • If the player visits the tower prior to beginning the quest, Aloy will comment on the Tenakth belongings gathered at the end of the corridor.
  • If Aloy does not speak to Emboh to start the quest, she will find Jaxx at the cave mouth the first time she heads there.
  • If the player has visited Riverwatch prior to the quest, Aloy will tell Jaxx and Sokorra that she will find the cache alone as she has already explored the tower before. Upon climbing the tower and walking down the corridor, Aloy will comment that she must have missed the supplies the last time she was there.
