ARTEMIS was the subordinate function of GAIA tasked with preserving and reintroducing animal life to the planet as part of Project Zero Dawn.

History

Purpose

ARTEMIS was designed to preserve and reintroduce animal life to Earth, headed by the Alpha Charles Ronson. Once the terraforming systems restored the planet to a habitable level, ARTEMIS would introduce necessary "pioneer organisms" (micro-organisms and insects, rabbits, hawks, foxes, geese, wolves, wild boars, and turkeys) to the Earth, further reviving the biosphere. The new humans would be taught by APOLLO how to reintroduce the other species.[1]

Results

ARTEMIS' primary objective was for the most part successful, as evidenced by the fauna occupying the world. However, much like ELEUTHIA, its success was hindered by the purging of APOLLO. Without the database, humans had no idea what ARTEMIS was, let alone how to use it for its intended purpose. As a result, the re-introduced fauna remains limited to pioneer species and smaller animals. However, as seen in the Cut, there is limited diversity across biomes, as several species of fauna unique to that region can be found.

Unknown Signal

One day, an unknown transmission struck GAIA and turned her suborinate functions, including ARTEMIS, into independent AIs set only to their predetermined purpose. This caused the subordinate function HADES to initiate its purpose of destroying the biosphere. To prevent this, GAIA activated her kill-switch in an attempt to destroy her sub-functions along with herself. However, in response to this, HADES released a virus that unshackled itself along with all the other sub-functions from her. ARTEMIS then disappeared for parts unknown.
