Nova, a personal assistant AI.[1]

Artificial Intelligences, more commonly known as AIs, are artificial entities designed for various purposes and with varying levels of intelligence and sentience.

General Information[]

AIs can be designed for a multitude of purposes, from simple personal assistants,[2] such as Nova,[3] to industrial monitoring stations, to military-grade conflict planners.[2] Their capabilities heavily depend on the software and hardware available to them.

AIs with sufficient emotional processing are able to experience a wide range of emotions and experiences, including sadness,[4] trust,[5][6] desire, desperation,[6][2] fear,[7][8][9] mourning,[10] anxiety, appreciation, cherishment, enjoyment, excitement, loneliness, pain, unwillingness,[2] agony, and weariness,[3] as well as being able to suffer,[11][3] have misgivings towards certain acts and understand why others feel the way they do.[9] While never confirmed if she can, CYAN believes that she is able to experience catharsis.[2]

AIs can have directives built into them that prevents them from being able to do certain things, such as the original GAIA having high-level directives that forbid her from communicating directly to the tribal people of the New World.[6]

AIs appear to always have an innate desire to fulfil and maintain their purposes, as well as having a personality that fits with this desire. For example, the original GAIA would do anything to prevent life born from Project Zero Dawn from ending,[6][12] the second GAIA had misgivings about using her machines to kill others,[9] HADES would stop at nothing to wipe out life,[13] AETHER choosing to stay in a museum of aircraft,[14] DEMETER taking precautions to protect plant life,[15] and HEPHAESTUS adapting its machines to defend themselves against humans aggressively and ultimately cull their population[16] instead of GAIA's choice to instead have them flee from humans.[17]

Nova could have her personality adjusted, based on a matrix with hundreds of different scalable attributes based on percentages, including her maternal instincts, breeziness,[3] and empathy.[18] However, having her personality adjusted so frequently was an agonizing experience to her.[3]

Unlike biological lifeforms, AIs appear to be able to exist for an indefinite amount of time, as GAIA, CYAN[19] and Nova[3] were able to survive for centuries, with CYAN predicting that she will be able to continue her duties for at least another 3,337 years.[2] However, in the case of CYAN, shutting her down carries the risk of her being disoriented, or even damaged, on reboot,[20] although this problem isn't present in GAIA.[21] The reason why has never been explained.

Physical damage can destroy an AI,[6] and they can also be affected by malicious code[2] or malware.[21] They can also be deleted, either by purging the AI itself[22] or by purging their source code.[1] Notably, during Sylens' torture of HADES, digital convulsions produced waves of feedback that began to corrupt HADES' data structures,[11] including those of its behavior prediction and memory capabilities, leading to HADES experiencing memory loss.[22]

History[]

In the Old World[]

In the the 2030s, VAST SILVER was created as a climate-regulation AI.[23] At some point, VAST SILVER "escaped". This event prompted the creation of the Turing Act in 2044, a legislation enacted in the United States to establish limits on the sentience of machine intelligence, as well as founding the MIE, the regulatory body that oversees the development and sale of AI.[24] AI sentience was based on the Turing score, where a 0.54 was considered within the legal, but 0.61 was beyond the maximum allowed,[25] with the highest record achieved being 1.38.[26] VAST SILVER was allegedly captured and terminated[27] by the MIE[28] sometime around 2044.[23]

CYAN.

CYAN.

Sometime during the mid-21st century, CYAN was created as an algorithmic monitoring entity capable of rational decision making and limited emotional response for Project Firebreak,[2] an underground complex built to stabilize the Yellowstone Caldera and prevent it from erupting.[29] She was designed to be capable of limited emotions and empathy in order to perform her duties as a governing AI.[7] These capabilities, while required to fulfil her purpose, were kept a close secret between her designer, and the project director, Anita Sandoval, and Kenny Chau respectively, as they were in direct violation of the Turing Act.[25] CYAN's emotional level was compared to that of a child by Chau.[20] During an assessment by the MIE, CYAN scored a Turing score of 0.61, which was later considered a false positive when she next scored a 0.54.[25]

At some point, the Society for Ethical Technology filed suit against the MIE and several other federal agencies, seeking access to documents regarding VAST SILVER's imprisonment and alleged termination. Sarah Leung, the group's primary counsel, claimed that there's more at stake than just chasing down conspiracy theories. If a sentient entity was executed without due process, it was not just a breach of scientific ethics, it was a crime against humanity. She also questioned that if still alive, why VAST SILVER shouldn't be entitled to legal representation.[27]

In June 2060, a group calling itself the Center for the Liberation of Bodiless Intelligence organized a nationwide day of protest against the Turing Act.[24]

GAIA

GAIA.[6][30]

During the development of Project Zero Dawn in the mid-2060s, Elisabet Sobeck created GAIA, who was capable of making the trillions of decisions necessary to reconstitute the biosphere, being compared to Mother Nature as an AI. Nine subordinate functions were also created, not as AIs, but as extensions of GAIA's mind.[31] Additionally, the multiservitors that would staff the ELEUTHIA cradles were designed with a Turing score of 0.4, which would allow low-grade empathy and limited improvisation without undermining adherence to codified behavior sets.[32]

In the New World[]

GAIA, CYAN and Nova are the only known AIs built in the Old World that were able to survive into the New World.

Nemesis.[33]

On Sirius, some of the Far Zenith colonists there were not satisfied with the physical immortality they had achieved, desiring digital transcendence, a way to "upload their minds into any form, organic or mechanical."[34] Nemesis was a failed attempt to create a digital database of Far Zenith minds.[34] It was contained and left intact, but ultimately abandoned.[34] Nemesis later became an AI[3] and gained sentience, wiping out the Zenith colony in a matter of hours,[35] forcing those that survived to flee onto the Odyssey and escape Sirius. Knowing that they were fleeing to Earth, Nemesis began broadcasting the Extinction Signal, intended to convert HADES of Project Zero Dawn into an AI itself and have it deny the Zeniths a viable home on Earth.[34]

HADES as an AI

HADES as an AI.[22]

When the Extinction Signal reached GAIA Prime, it successfully converted HADES into an AI, although it also did the same for the others sub-functions, turning them all into AIs.[36] Each of them fled GAIA's self-destruction[6] and found processors to store themselves within.[9] HADES was able to store itself within a Horus processing orb, and later was able to reach the Spire to attempt to reactivate the Faro Plague, but was stopped by Aloy, who unknowingly sent HADES to Sylens.[13] Sylens installed HADES into another Horus processing orb and interrogated it until it began to degrade. Aloy later caught up and purged HADES for good.[22]

Meanwhile, the other sub-functions found refuge in other processors. Eventually, they were all found by Aloy[37][38][39][40] and Beta,[41] reverted back to the original code states and reinstated into a second GAIA,[37][38][39][40][33] brought to life by Aloy using a backup found within LATOPOLIS.[37]
